but not the others!
You never know when a storm is going to hit, even if you pay close attention to all the weather forecasts. One day in
Abaco, Bahamas, we knew there was a storm coming and, like other boaters, picked what we thought would be a safe marina. It would have been safe, if the storm had done what it was forecasted to do.

“I saw a boat on the way home yesterday” Jim said to his wife the other day. “I think I’d like to get into boating” he continued. “They are only asking $x for the boat and trailer and I was wondering if it is a good deal and is it a good boat?”
We hear stories like this quite often and so many times it turns out to be a horror story.

We set out from great Guana Cay for Green Turtle Cay one morning when we were cruising Abaco, Bahamas. This required going through the dreaded "Whale Passage" and a 5-mile stretch of open Atlantic Ocean that is traditionally rough, as the sea builds on the shallow water adjacent to the Cays.

As we are writing this newsletter, we had probably the biggest snow storm of the year in southern Ontario. We spent all day blowing and shoveling snow as did most of the population in Ontario and Quebec and many of the eastern States. Hardly the time to be thinking about boating!
But, this afternoon, we are on the road with boating very much on our minds.

Candles on board your boat aren’t a good idea. Why? Boats move and rock in wind gusts and waves. Having liquid wax and flame upset is a recipe for fire. Even if you take precautions and protect your flame, there are other problems. In a small cabin, as people move around a dinette table one with long hair could come close to the flame resulting in hair catching fire. Also, the soot from the flame blackens the headliner and curtains.
The solution can be found at Christmas.
