Buying a Boat at a Boat Show

First Step

The very first step in buying a boat is deciding, well ahead of a attending a Boat Show, in consultation with the family, what your boating activities are going to be.

Will your primary activity be waterskiing, day cruises, day sailing, fishing, overnight trips, weekend trips, week trips, longer cruises, cottage taxi, speed, or a combination? What will your secondary activities be? Do you want a boat for fishing but also want to go on overnight trips from time to time? Do you want a cottage taxi but still want to be able to take day long trips and ski at the cottage?

Biggest Mistake

The biggest mistake people make is buying a boat, before they decide what activities they want the boat for. Once they’ve got it, they are quite often sorely disappointed. A few examples:

The kids needed a head, but the bowrider didn’t have one.

The cottage taxi boat didn’t have a big enough motor and was too bulky for skiing at the cottage.

The guy who fell in love and bought a narrow beam mid cabin cruiser but it wasn’t roomy enough for his family of "large" people. It looked suitable to him at the Boat Show, but when his family was aboard, it was tippy and wouldn’t perform under the load. Worst of all, it turned out to be an "excuse me" boat. Every time they moved, they had to say "excuse me" because of the small space. We know families this has happened to and they had to cut their holiday short and buy a larger boat to suit them.

Don’t make this common mistake.

Don’t end up buying the wrong boat that could cost plenty to trade.
Don’t waste valuable time buying a boat that doesn’t "FIT" your needs.

QuickTip
Researching Products

Boat Shows are a great place to research a product because you’ll find it, and comparable products, in several booths.

Whether it’s electronics, accessories, clothing, boats, motors or a host of other marine products, you will find them on display at Boat Shows. They have qualified staff to answer all your questions and let you see and feel them.

Ask the same questions of each exhibitor. You’ll be better educated and quite amazed at the variety of answers. Enjoy.
