Canvas – Fire Extinguishers – Flares

For those of us who put our boats away for the winter, there are some things we can do now and over the next few weeks to reduce the amount of work necessary to get ready for spring launch. Here are three things you can do now so you can cross them off your list.

Does Your Canvas Need Attention?

Omer called this morning to say “Your canvas has been repaired and is ready for pickup”. I had taken it to him a few weeks ago while he wasn’t too busy, so I’d have it finished in plenty of time before spring launch.

There is still time for you to have all those snaps and zippers repaired and new panels installed where necessary. Call your canvas guy to schedule your repair or check with your marina.

If you are considering new canvas, refer to our Replacing Canvas newsletter to pick up loads of tips to incorporate into your design, so you end up with a more functional enclosure for your boat with new features and benefits.

The Solve the Canvas Puzzle newsletter applies to both new and installed canvas to reduce the challenge of putting up your canvas. When a threatening storm requires a goof-proof installation ASAP, using this simple tip will allow you to put up the canvas twice as fast. \

Do Your Fire Extinguishers Need Re-Charging?

Check your fire extinguishers to see if they are still in the green zone or need to be re-charged. Now would be a good time to do your annual inspection.

Contact your marina or local recharging agent to do a thorough check to ensure that your fire extinguishers will operate effectively and safely. They will do any necessary repairs, recharging or recommend replacement.

Have Your Flares Expired?

Flares don’t last forever! They have an expiry date of 4 years from date of manufacture. Take time now to check them and, if necessary, replace them so that you don’t have to worry about them all summer. They will be there ready if you ever need them. Besides, the law requires that you have up to date flares.

Before you buy, there is much to know. Check our Flares Newsletter for information on buying old stock, expired flares, disposal of old flares and more.
